Blue (1st place), red (2nd place), and white (3rd place) ribbons will be awarded in the following categories:

  • Best Black and White Photo

  • Best DC-Themed Photo

  • Best Photo of People/Portraits

  • Best Photo of a Pet/Animal

RULES

  1. Individuals may not submit more than one entry for each of the categories listed above.

  2. Only digital photographs may be submitted.

JUDGING CRITERIA

  1. Composition (40%)

    1. Objects in the photo are arranged in a meaningful, pleasing manner. An interesting perspective was used.

  2. Technical Quality (30%)

    1. Photograph uses focus in a skilled way.

  3. Light/Color (30%)

    1. Photograph represents skilled use of lighting, colors, and/or shading.

SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Register for the photography contest at https://www.dcstatefair.org/2026-contests by 11:00 pm on Friday, August 21.

  2. Submit a photo of your entry at https://forms.gle/bbgbcMKs86zakwzQ7 by 11:00 pm on Friday, August 21. For the file name of the photo, please use the following naming convention: Contest Name_Entry Name_Last Name. For example, DC Photo_Reflecting Pool_Anderson.

    1. Note that uploading documents to that form requires a Google account sign in. If you are unable to access or submit the form, please send your photo submission to contests@dcstatefair.org, with the subject line “Photography Contest Submission.” In the email, include your name, the email you used to register for the contest, and the name of the entry.
