2025 Contest Registration Pie Contests

Pie Contests

PRIZES 

Blue (1st place), red (2nd place), and white (3rd place) ribbons will be awarded in the following categories:

  • Best Apple Pie

  • Best Fruit Non-Apple Pie

  • Best Savory Pie/Galette

  • Best Sweet Non-Fruit Pie

RULES

  1. Individuals may not submit more than one entry for each of the four categories listed above.  

  2. Entry’s crust and filling must be made from scratch (no prebaked, premade/packaged crusts, or canned pie fillings).

  3. Entries cannot contain any of the following: uncooked cream, cream cheese, Jell-O/gelatin, raw eggs, or other products that are high risk for spoilage. No pies that require refrigeration will be accepted.

JUDGING CRITERIA

  1. Taste (40%)

    1. Pie or galette is satisfying and flavor is nuanced.

    2. Apple, fruit non-apple, and sweet non-fruit pie is sweet but not overly so.

    3. Savory pie or galette is rich and not overly salty.

  2. Appearance (20%)

    1. Pie or galette appearance is pleasing to the eye.

  3. Crust (20%)

    1. Pie or galette crust is flaky and tender, not dry or tough.

    2. No soggy bottoms.

  4. Filling (20%)

    1. Pie or galette filling has a pleasant texture and is in appropriate proportion in relation to the crust.

SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Register for the pie contest at https://www.dcstatefair.org/2025-contests by 9:00 p.m. on Friday, August 15. No walk-up registrations will be accepted.

  2. Bring your entry, accompanied with 1) a removable label that includes your name, the contest category, and the name of the entry and 2) a list of ingredients used in making your entry to the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library at 901 G St NW on Saturday, August 23 between 11 am and 1 pm. Exact room location will be sent closer to the date.

PRIZES 

One best in show rosette and a baking-related gift card will be awarded to the overall best pie, regardless of category.

RULES

  1. Pie must be entered into a specific category (apple pie, fruit non-apple pie, sweet non-fruit pie, savory pie) and abide by all applicable rules. Galettes are not eligible to win best pie in show.

  2. Winning pie will be removed from consideration from the specific categories.

JUDGING CRITERIA

  1. Top score (100%)

    1. Pie with the highest score across all categories will be deemed the Best Pie in Show.
